Welcome to "folklore europaea"
On this web site a multimedia database will be developed which will offer records of festivals, customs and traditions in different European regions. Without an aspiration for completeness "folklore europaea" combines previously widespread information and offers multiple methods of data retrieval which facilitate experts to detailed comparisons of European cultures. For the broad public the project provides vivid ethnographic orientation by the means of texts, pictures, documentary films and audio recordings and can therefore be used as tourist information according to the principle "what when where".
In the context of European Integration "folklore europaea" intends to identify linkages, interdependencies and differences between cultures across national borders. Similarities and differences in cultural heritages will be pointed out, insights in the construction of identities and mentalities will be granted and with the help of the dynamics of festivals, customs and traditions conclusions can be drawn concerning cultural transformation processes.
We kindly would like to point out that the web site's user interface is provided in English while the data base is currently mainly available in German. We regret the inconveniences and thank you for your understanding.
